Michael Cassera - Casting Director

Michael Cassara, CSA is a Casting Director and Producer based in New York City and dedicated to developing and fostering the growth of new musicals, plays, and film projects.

Since the formation of Michael Cassara Casting in 2003, Michael has worked with many of the nation’s top theatres including The Old Globe, Queens Theatre, Great Lakes Theater Festival, Idaho Shakespeare Festival, Gulfshore Playhouse, The White Plains Performing Arts Center, Olney Theatre Center, and more.

Recent theatre projects have included Forbidden Broadway: Alive & Kicking!Fat Camp(off-Broadway), Dames At Sea (dir. Randy Skinner), The City Club (Minetta Lane), The Jack Cole Project (dir. Chet Walker), Kingdom (The Old Globe), Falling For Eve (York Theatre), The Man Who Came To Dinner (The Peccadillo), and the NY premiere of Jeffrey Hatcher's Ten Chimneys, in addition to countless readings, workshops and regional theatre productions.

In New York, Michael is the resident casting director of the New York Musical Theatre Festival, where he has cast over 50 individual projects since the festival’s inception in 2004. Some favorite NYMF casting credits include The Yellow Wood (dir. Tony Award Winner BD Wong), All Fall Down (dir. Lonny Price), The Woman Upstairs (by Kait Kerrigan and Brian Lowdermilk), The Last Smoker In America (dir. Sheryl Kaller), Fat Camp (dir. Alex Timbers), Prison Dancer (dir. Jenn Rapp), Max Understood (dir. David Schweizer),Swing State (dir. Igor Goldin), and Twilight In Manchego (dir. Billy Porter).

Michael recently cast two feature films: Grantham and Rose (starring Marla Gibbs and Jake T. Austin, directed by Kristin Hanggi) and Contest (starring Raviv Ullman, Kenton Duty and Katherine McNamara, directed by Anthony Giunta) both due in theatres in 2013.  Other film credits include Clear Blue Tuesday (dir. Elizabeth Lucas) and the short filmAlienated (dir. Paul Borghese, starring Vincent Pastore.)

Originally a performer, Michael is a native Clevelander and a graduate of the musical theatre program at Otterbein College. He regularly teaches and lectures on musical theatre and the entertainment industry, in New York City and throughout the world and has taught master classes and workshops at over 40 universities and training programs, in addition to serving on the adjunct faculty at Pace University, New York University and the University Of The Arts.    Member, Casting Society of America.
